Coffee ‘beans’ are actually the roasted seeds of coffee cherries, picked from the branches of coffee trees. Most of the time, these cherries bear two seeds that are both flat on one side and curved on the other. In 5% of cases, these cherries will produce only one seed, which is known as a peaberry for its spherical, pea-like appearance. The coffee from Kirurua Coffee Factory in Kiambu, Kenya, was hand sorted after harvest, and this lot consists of 100% peaberries, from SL28 and SL34 variety coffee trees.
